PWGP to visitor status

Hi guys!

My PWGP is expiring soon but I want to stay as a visitor status for a couple more months to wait if I get chosen for CEC and to settle a few more things here. I already have a TRV that expires in 2030. Can I just stay and my status will be automatically presumed to visitor or do I have to leave the country and come back (say do a quick trip to the US and come back).

LaurenAB You mentioned that you want to wait in Canada for a couple of months to see if you get chosen for CEC.
My experience with Canadian immigration is that how ever long you anticipate a program is going to take, add 40% more to your timeline. Rarely do programs go through faster than their advertised time and its always delays that make it very hard. Especially if you are in a situation where you can't wait it out.

The good news is that you can possibly change your status back to a visitor. However, this would not automatically happen and you have to request it 30 days before your PWGP expires.

About that 30 days I don't beleive that is the law. It's what the IRCC has on their website but it's more of a good practice guideline.

The law says you can apply for a change of status as long as you have status (meanig technically one day before you lose you status). And until you are waiting to hear back about the change of status, you are entitled to stay in the country under what is called 'implied status'.

I think the previous replies are right. The fact that you have a TRV valid till 2030 is irrelevant here. That was only issued for letting you in the country. Once inside your status is defined by the officer at the border or what you apply for. So basically disregard the TRV for now.

Martin I applied for a chabge in Status and will be waiting to see how it goes. Luckily I can stay in the meantime and see how it goes.

The good thing is while you're waiting for the result of you change in status, you're eligible to stay in Canada. This in my opinion is one of the less known ways to buy yourself time while your PR application is being processed.
